Built in 1973 the Huan offers a unique venue for sea lovers who wants to enjoy the true Hong Kong experience of a old Chinese sailing boat. The 3 mast traditional Chinese junk is 89ft long with displaying a unique teak deck. Equipped with one engine Gardner 150 HP and 2 'onan' marine generator the Huan is a perfect venue to welcome up 59 people.
Originally planned in 1973 as a teak- deck junk for three
Europeans planning a cruise to the Mediterranean, the vessel was almost
finished when funds ran dry and the junk was sold to an Aberdeen shipyard. The
boat languished for more than 1 years among more practical and less-impressive
fishing junks until Philip Ney, a professor of child psychiatry at Hong Kong
University, spotted its potential as a training ship and seagoing classroom for
children.
Volunteers worked for a year repairing the junk and refurbishing it through donated funds.
They named it the Huan, which means happiness in Putonghua, after paying a Chinese name consultant for advice. The junk made its maiden voyage with a group of underprivileged children in February 1978.
Since 1978, a non-profit group based in Aberdeen
sponsored by The Hong Kong Jockey Club, called Adventure- Ship, has kept the
Huan , sailing regularly with a unique mission as a floating classroom for
disabled and underprivileged children.
After more than 27 years in service the Adventure-Ship launched a program to build a replacement sailing training vessel for the Huan. The new vessel was completed in Spring 2005 and named the Jockey Club Huan, in recognition of Hong Kong Jockey Club's donation of $24 million to fund construction.
In 2006 the Huan was acquired by sea lovers and was transformed into a charter boat for everyone to have the chance to enjoy this unique experience. In the same spirit SpySea took over the Huan in June 2007 to fully leverage this collectable piece and give the chance to anyone to experience this unique expereince
